Polity: Introduction

A country's constitution is a document that includes a collection of written laws that everybody living in that country recognizes.

The Constitution of a country is the supreme law of the nation, deciding how people in that country communicate with one another as well as regulating the government and its policies against its citizens.

The Constitution

The Constitution's Role

A constitution has many functions; the following are some of them

  • It refers to the rules and regulations that foster a sense of trust and cooperation among people from various social strata who live together.
  • It creates a structure under which the country's government and other institutions operate;
  • It sets out the steps for establishing the government and making decisions.
  • It determines the government's powers, obligations, and limitations
  • It also outlines citizens' rights and describes the rule of law as well as a mechanism to protect them.
  • The constitutions of each democratic country are their own. However, having a comprehensive Constitution in a nation is no guarantee that it is truly democratic.
  • After the Great Britain War of Independence in 1787, the Americans gave themselves a constitution.
  • Similarly, after the revolution in 1791, in the first place and recently in 1958, the French people approved a democratic constitution. In all democracies, a written constitution has since become a practice.
  • A constitution is called the compilation of basic rules, which are comprehensive and define −
                                  1   The powers to do things by elected governments;
                                  2   Restrictions on not doing certain things;
                                  3   Citizen's fundamental rights;
                                  4   How in future will the rulers be chosen.

  • यह एक संरचना बनाता है जिसके तहत देश की सरकार और अन्य संस्थान संचालित होते हैं;
                                  1 चुनी हुई सरकारों द्वारा चीजों को करने की शक्तियाँ;
                                  2 कुछ चीजें नहीं करने पर प्रतिबंध;
                                  3 नागरिक के मौलिक अधिकार;
                                  4 भविष्य में शासकों को कैसे चुना जाएगा।
